Notes

Dam (per source): Apache Queen W 6466 Owned by Joe Stroube, Corsicana, Texas Reference: Appaloosa News 1-65:49, 3-65:1 Research notes from Pat Mefferd: CHEROKEE'S BROKEN ARROW 14273: Stallion Foaled 1961 Bay/white w/bay spots over loin/hips Sire.....Cherokee A. F2874 Dam....Apache Queen W. 6466 by Apache F730 Owned by Joe Stroube, Corsicana, Texas Owned by Col. Vic Lisec (Hill AFB, Utah, near Ogden) and Dee R. Spiers (Ogden, Utah). 1st Dam: APACHE QUEEN W. #6466 (White Mare, 1952) by Apache F730 out of Dowager by Sportin King (JS/USR). Bred by R. Bailey, Albion, Idaho; owned by Dee Spiers, Ogden, Utah. Registered sometime between 1957 and 1960. Transferred from Dee Spiers, Ogden, UT. to S.M. and Mable Woodward, Buckeye, AZ.; to C.D. Leon, Abileen, TX.; to Adams Appaloosa Farm, Oklahoma City, OK. thru ApHC Stud Book IV (Jan. 1, 1961). Her color "white" leads me to wonder if she was actually gray? Dam of three ApHC foals.... 1961...Cherokee's Broken Arrow 14273. Refer to above informtion. 1962...Tico's TNT T22691 (Stallion. Sorrel/white o/hips) by Myres Tico Tico 8553. Bred by Joe Stroube, Corsicana, Texas 1963...Tico's Patch T38020 (Stallion. Blue Roan/white spots o/hips) by Myres Tico Tico 8553. Bred by Joe Stroube, Corsicana, Texas. 2nd Dam: DOWAGER (Gray Mare. Foaled 1949 or before) by Sporting King (JC/US Remount), out of a "Thoroughbred Mare". Her breeder is unknown at this time; it is my opinion she was bred in Nevada and may be a product of Remount program. This mare was not registered in the American Stud Book; she may have been registerd in the American Remount Assn/Half-Bred Stud Book. Col. Vic Lisec believed that she was 3/4 Thoroughbred. If the ApHC records are correct, DOWAGER was used by R. Bailey, Albion, Idaho in or around 1951, and Fred Wimberly, Dallas, Texas in or around 1960. Dam of two foals of record... 1952...Apache Queen W T6466. Refer to above information. 19??...Tony's Powder AQHA (Gray Mare, foaled 1958 or before) by Tony Boy AQHA 1551. Used by Fred Wimberley, Dallas, Texas. Tony's Powder was shown to be "AQHA" in the ApHC Stud Book, however she is not in the AQHA or NQHBA Stud Book under this name. She may have been Appendix registered. I find only one foal of record thus far...Zip's Silver Maid T23297 (Lt. Blue Roan Mare, foaled 1961) by Dakota Zip F3087; bred by Fred Wimberly, Dallas, Texas. SPORTING KING JC/US Remount (Bay Stallion, Foaled 1925) by Sporting Blood, out of Grace King by Judge Wright. Bred by J. Charles Eaton, Cincinnati, OH. Unplaced in two starts. Assigned to C.A.Sewell, Owyhee, NV. 1930 thru 1935; R.T. Anderson, Metropolis, NV. 1935 and 1936; J.W. Mink, North Fork and Elko, NV. 1936 thru 1939; Dunphy Ranch, Dunphy, NV in 1940; Ellison Ranching Co., Tuscaroa, NV. 1941 thru 1944; Remount Dep at Pomona, CA. In 1945; D.D. Liskey, Klamath, OR. 1946 and 1947; Reported dead in 1948. Some Appaloosas came out of several of the above Civilian Remount Agents programs. There is another DOWAGER who comes into the picture, found in the American Stud Book for registered Thoroughbreds. Many years ago, I ruled her out as being the dam of APACHE QUEEN W. DOWAGER JC (Bay Mare, 1948) by Free France, out of *Mercellina by Figaro. Bred by Louis B. Mayer (movie mogel), Culver City, CA. She raced as a three year old (1951), unplaced in 2 starts, no earnings. DOWAGER produced nine Jockey Club foals, seven starters, five winners. In 1953 she was bred to Owners Choice (JC). Her 1st Jockey Club foal arrived in 1954. DOWAGER JC was owned by James B. Watriss, then of California, in 1953, 1954; George A Pope, Jr from 1955 thru 1963; Mr/Mrs. Robert S. Stephens of Arizona in 1963, 1964. Both Watriss and Pope Jr. were big names in Thoroughbred breeding and racing. James B. Watriss bred and raced Great Communicator (LTE $2,922,615). George A. Pope, Jr. bred and raced such horses as Decidely (1962 Kentucky Derby Winner) and Hill Rise (2nd Kentucky Derby, 3rd Preakness in 1964). There is the possibility that DOWAGER JC could have had a non-Thoroughbred foal in 1952, however I have not found any record that this mare ever left California in 1951, to be bred to APACHE F730 in Utah or visa versa. The question....is which DOWAGER actually produced the appaloosa APACHE QUEEN W. in 1952? You can view scans [not available] from questions I asked the ApHC regarding DOWAGER dated March 3, 1976. The green handwriting is that of ApHC's Terry Bigalow, as well as scans from the ApHC Race Records 1962-1971, showing DOWAGER's sire to be Sporting King (TB). In 2008, I re-visited this file. The old microfiche showed DOWAGER to be a gray mare by Sporting King (TB)....however....there had been an update on DOWAGER made back in 2001. It showed her to be DOWAGER (JC) by Free France, out of *Marcellina! I was told by the registration department that there was no indication of who requested the change, and who actually wrote this information on the original ApHC Application. Strange that 32 years later someone changes this pedigree. I am curious as to what type of proof it took to get this pedigree changed, who provided the information and if it was passed at a board meeting? I will be forwarding this information to the ApHC Registration Department.
